BIOGRAPHY

Carl Derek Uhlman was born in Battle Creek, Michigan in 1956.  His family moved to Stamford, Connecticut in 1961.  He created jewelry in the early 1970's and made his first sculptures in 1978.  He studied bronze casting and drawing at The State University of New York in Purchase, NY and clay modeling, molding and casting and stone carving at The Silvermine Guild of Artists (now The Silvermine Arts Center) in New Canaan, CT.  He started working as an assistant with the sculptor, Ivan Biro in 1980 and with the sculptor Reuben Nakian in 1981.  He received his first major commission from General foods Corporation in 1983.  He now lives and works in Norwalk, CT.
